Some Reddit users pointed out (link) that HMD Global, the company that owns the Nokia brand, doesn’t allow OEM unlocking on their smartphones. OEM unlocking enables the installation of custom operating systems on smartphones, which are typically locked down unless you unlock the bootloader. Examples of mobile operating systems are LineageOS, CalyxOS and GrapheneOS, although the latter is available exclusively on Google Pixel devices.
Granted, the Reddit post dates back seven years and things might have changed in the meantime. As it turns out, it looks like things did change!
How do I know that? Well, I reached out to HMD Global’s customer service and they informed me that OEM unlocking is possible.
Needless to say, I’ll be sure to order one of their devices and put this theory to the test. If true, that would be excellent news as HMD smartphones would not only be easily repairable but also customizable in terms of software.
Below are screenshots of my conversation with HMD Global’s customer service.
