Hi, I’m Jeremy Defrère a.k.a. “Jer Def”, an independent software developer, GNU/Linux system administrator and IT consultant from Belgium with a strong focus on privacy and cybersecurity.
My goal is to empower people through freedom and independence, one piece of software at a time.
True freedom comes from being unknown.

Some facts about me you might be interested in knowing:
- I use only free and open source software, hereby drastically reducing your costs in the short and long run. To say I have a deep knowledge of free and open source software (FOSS) is quite an understatement as I started using FOSS back in the mid-nineties. Some famous examples of FOSS include GIMP and Blender. Or even Firefox for that matter, which you’re probably already familiar with.
- I hate subscriptions, therefore I will never impose one on you. Once my job is done, there are no recurring fees. There are, however, some exceptions to this, such as recurring fees for domain name + hosting if you order a website, which I detailed in this article. However, those fees are entirely managed by you, which means you can cancel at any time.
- I speak four languages (Dutch, English, French and German). This means we are guaranteed to find a language that we both speak…
- … and I’m well on my way to mastering Thai as my dear wife, Suwadee, is from the Land of Smiles!
- I don’t stop until I find a solution. Heck, it keeps me up at night!
